At the head of Schouwen on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland, you will find Burgh-Haamstede. It consists of two parts: Burgh and Haamstede. This beautiful village in Zeeland boasts vast nature reserves and a beautiful lighthouse, and it is also incredibly charming. There is a good reason why many tourists flock to Burgh-Haamstede every year: it is a popular holiday destination, and rightly so!
Burgh-Haamstede is a beautiful place that is well worth a visit, with many opportunities to get active or relax. Dating back to the 13th century, the impressive castle of Haamstede is an absolute must-see. Surrounded by stunning gardens, the castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's history.
Burgh-Haamstede's lighthouse, also known as the 'Westerlichttoren' is a significant monument and a popular tourist attraction in the area. Built in 1837, the tower stands at the westernmost tip of Schouwen-Duiveland, close to the dunes and beach. Fifty-eight metres in height, the tower makes for an imposing sight. The lighthouse used to mark the entrance to the Oosterschelde, to help ships safely reach the port of Zierikzee. The lighthouse was modernised in 1911, and an electric lamp was installed. The tower was last used as a lighthouse in 1947 and the light is now only symbolically lit on special occasions. Today, Burgh-Haamstede's lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can climb the 225 steps leading to the top of the tower. Once at the top, you are rewarded with a breath-taking view of the surroundings, the dunes and the sea. In clear weather, you can even see the Rotterdam skyline! The tower is also accessible to visitors with disabilities, thanks to a special lift.
The Burgh-Haamstede area is the perfect spot for nature lovers. The North Sea flood disaster of 1953 caused a great deal of damage in many places, and this was perhaps most
evident in the area around Burgh-Haamstede. Many places have now been refurbished and there is plenty of beautiful nature to admire: in the dune-rich Kop van Schouwen nature
reserve, for example. If you are heading out for a cycle or walk there, be sure to take your binoculars to admire all the unusual birds!
If you are visiting Burgh-Haamstede, the Oosterscheldekering is an absolute must-visit. These flood barriers are part of the Delta Works. Right in the middle of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier you will find Neeltje Jans: an amusement park and museum about the Delta Works. A very interesting place for young and old alike! The Plompe Toren, the only church tower left in the otherwise sunken town of Koudekerke, is also worth a visit. This tower with its special history offers a lovely view of the hinterland of Schouwen-Duiveland. If you are an art lover, be sure to stop by gallery Het Oude Raadhuis.
Like everywhere else in Zeeland, Burgh-Haamstede is a real paradise for seafood lovers. You will find several restaurants here that serve fish straight from the sea: the best seafood there is! Visit Bistro West, for example, where you can enjoy fantastic dishes. In addition to tasting amazing, these dishes are also a feast for the eyes. This Bistro specialises in meat: all steaks served are grilled on lava stones! Bistro West also serves vegetarian food: they are known for their delicious burgers, but are also increasingly specialising in vegetarian and vegan dishes too. In other words: there is something for everyone! If you simply can't get enough of seafood, you should definitely stop by Restaurant Het Vissershuis. From Dutch shrimp to Dover sole, sea bass, large prawns and, of course, mussels. True seafood lovers can eat their fill here, but meat lovers and vegetarians will also find delicious items on the menu! If you want to partake of the nightlife after dinner, Renesse is only a few kilometres away: a famous (and infamous!) seaside resort bursting with pubs and nightclubs.
