History of Tholen

Tholen is famous for its fascinating and rich history, and it shows! The town originated in the13 th century. Like many other historic towns, the former city walls shaped its distinct star form. Walking through the town, you can still see many elements dating back to the Middle Ages, such as historic buildings, the Town Hall, Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (the Church of Our Lady), de Grote Kerk (Great Church) and picturesque streets. Island of Tholen

Tholen is a former island in the province of Zeeland, which is part of the municipality of Tholen along with the former island of Sint Philipsland. It is surrounded by a whopping
seven different bodies of water: the Krabbenkreek, the Mastgat, the Keeten, the Oosterschelde, the Eendracht, the Schelde-Rijnkanaal and the Zoommeer. Explore Tholen's beautiful nature by bike and enjoy the stunning views across the water. Did you know that the entire island is home to only a single traffic light? How is that for a sign of ultimate tranquillity... If you prefer to move around on foot, there are several hiking trails. The hiking network will take you along quiet farmland trails, unique views and authentic

Besides the historic Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, you will also find two windmills in Tholen: De Hoop and De Verwachting. You will find De Hoop on the waterfront on the old city walls and De Verwachting on Vlasmarkt.
