About the Oosterschelde National Park

We're well aware of the beauty of the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, but there's still much to learn about the Oosterschelde National Park. It's an important nature reserve that holds both ecological and recreational value. Thanks to the ebb and flow of tides and the presence of both salt and fresh water, thousands of species of birds, plants, and animals thrive here. With a bit of luck, you might even catch sight of seals basking on the Roggenplaat during low tide. Originally a river estuary, the park's dynamics were altered due to the construction of the Delta Works. The area is in constant motion, and a significant portion of it becomes exposed during low tide.

You can explore the Oosterschelde at any time. The park welcomes you without fences, main entrances, or entrance fees. However, please be mindful! This area is of immense value, so it's crucial to give nature the space it needs. There isn't a specific visitor center. Instead, you'll find information signs and pillars at various locations in the area. A small exhibition about the Oosterschelde National Park can be found at Deltapark Neeltje Jans. Please note that an admission fee is required for this.

This has also been written about.

Collecting Oysters and Mussels

What else is Zeeland known for? Oysters, mussels, and periwinkles, of course! They are not only incredibly delicious to eat, but you can also collect them yourself at the Oosterschelde National Park. In the past, anyone could harvest them from the water, but nowadays, certain rules must be followed. Be sure to read through these rules before you go oyster and mussel gathering!
