Dokkum

Dokkum

Welcome.in... Dokkum! A city in the municipality of Friesland and ideal for those who want to experience real history. In the Frisian language, the city is described as 'smûk,' which means cozy, beautiful, and well-maintained without being too large. The liveliness in the narrow shopping streets, charming terraces, and artisanal brewery make it a delightful place to stay. Have you become curious? Then read on, we'll tell you all about it!

Sights in Dokkum

Old Dokkum is a city filled with historical sights. There are several hotspots that are perfect for getting to know the city well:

  • Bonifatius: As a tangible tribute to the location where Bonifatius lost his life, a statue of Bonifatius stands next to the Bonifatius spring, measuring an impressive 2.50 meters in height. Around this spring, which serves as an important pilgrimage destination, a chapel has been built from monastery stones. You can also visit this chapel;

  • The ramparts: In 1581, Prince Willem of Orange ordered the construction of a hexagonal defensive work around the city with canals and fortifications: The ramparts. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely walk and take in other sights such as the Zeldenrust and De Hoop windmills, 19th-century cannons, and picturesque views;

  • The brewery: In 1705, Aafke Jelles purchased building number 15 on Diepswal and started the brewery 'Het Half Maentje' (The Half Moon). After ten years, she sold the brewery and its contents. Now, more than 300 years later, there are once again active breweries, and in honor of this history, a unique well seat was placed in 2020;

  • The Ice Fountain: In 2015, Birthe Leemeijer designed the Ice Fountain for Dokkum as part of the 11fountains project, a gift in honor of Leeuwarden-Fryslân as the European Capital of Culture in 2018. The fountain, installed in early 2019 after delays, symbolizes the relationship between humans and nature, climate change, and the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour), remaining a real eye-catcher due to its changing ice layers;

  • Admiralty: In 1597, the Admiralty established itself in Dokkum but later moved to Harlingen in 1645 due to the silting up of the sea connection. Captain Theunis Wolterz achieved successes, but prosperity disappeared with the Admiralty;

  • The Eleven Cities Tour: On January 2, 1909, participants of the first Elfstedentocht arrived in Dokkum, where Minne Hoekstra ultimately won after 13 hours and 50 minutes. The turning point in Dokkum is the first stamping post and remains a significant point. Since 1929, Dokkum has also been the last stamping post for safety reasons. Since 1997, everyone has been waiting for the next tour, and the longing for this legendary spectacle is great! It giet oan! (It's going to happen!)

  • City Rights: Count Jan I of Holland received a letter in 1298 signed by the city council of Dokkum, recognizing the city as the fourth in Friesland. The town hall, built in 1610, is still used by the Municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân, which includes 51 villages and 63 hamlets alongside Dokkum.
