History of Middelburg

As you walk through Middelburg, you cannot help but notice it: this city has a lot of history. Middelburg has more than 1,100 listed buildings! The city may not be enormous today, but Middelburg was once a metropolis and an important place for the VOC. In those days, it was one of the world's most important trading centres, where ships from all corners of the world arrived to unload their treasures. One of the buildings you simply have to see in Middelburg is its historic Town Hall, built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Zeeuws Museum, located in Middelburg Abbey, is also worth a visit if you want to find out more about the history of Zeeland. The Kloveniersdoelen is another very impressive historic building, where you can also have lunch, as it happens! If you want to enjoy the best views in Middelburg, you should definitely climb the steps of Lange Jan (Tall John Abbey Tower). You will need to catch your breath after climbing the 207 steps, but you will be richly rewarded!
