Welcome to ... Zoutelande! This village in Zeeland in the municipality of Veere has been the firm favourite of a wide audience for many years. Famous Dutch band Bløf even wrote a song about it! Surely that should convince you? Zoutelande is part of the 'Zeeland Riviera' and comes highly recommended for all who are looking for the ultimate combination of nature, tranquillity and fun. It is also a great starting point for an active holiday!
Zoutelande is a brilliant place to take in the fresh air on the beach. In fact, it is located slap bang in the middle of the south-west coast of Walcheren – which is why this village is also nicknamed the Zeeland Riviera. You will find one of the Netherlands' highest dunes here: at 54 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in Walcheren. This high vantage point offers stunning views of the island on one side, but of course also of the sea and the Western Scheldt.
In the unlikely event you've had enough of the beach, or if it's raining, why not spend an afternoon shopping in Zoutelande? Langstraat, located immediately behind the beach, is the beach resort's most popular shopping street. This street offers a variety of stores that cater to tourists and locals alike. It is also a great starting point for cycling tours on the island of Walcheren. You can cycle to Westkapelle and Domburg through the dunes. It is one of the oldest seaside resorts in the Netherlands. If you are looking for a fun activity with little ones, treat them to a visit to Waterspeeltuin de Meerpaal, a water playground that guarantees hours of water fun.
If you want to find out more about Zeeland's war history, the war bunker in the dunes of Zoutelande is not to be missed. Bunkermuseum Zoutelande tells the story of the Atlantikwall, the German coastal defenses in Zeeland during World War II. A very interesting place, well worth a visit!
In addition to these activities, Zoutelande also offers some wonderful sightseeing. Admire the oldest building in the village, the 'Catharina Church', or climb the 53-metre-high lighthouse in Westkapelle to enjoy the view of the island and the North Sea.
Zoutelande may be great for a retreat in nature, but it definitely has a convivial and social side as well! There is always something going on in lovely cafés, restaurants or beach bars. Zoutelande is also home to many activities and events. In September for example, there is the Jazz Concert at SEA festival, and in October the incredibly tough Kustmarathon (Coastal Marathon) takes place on, you guessed it, the beach! Hard work!
